The Pleasures of Vietnamese Table
Review by Allison Martin
Pleasures of the Vietnamese Table is sure to inspire you to cook Vietnamese food for your family and friends. Mai Pham, the owner of the Lemongrass Restaurant in Los Angeles, brings to her book years of professional experience and an enthusiasm for Vietnamese cooking and culture that is irrepressible. She chronicles some of her many trips back to Vietnam in her book, along with beautiful Black and white illustrations, so that the book is as fun to read as the recipes are to make. Each recipe is introduced with a little story, that draws you into the scene of Vietnam and encourages you to try them out. The recipes are easy to follow, and primarily include ingrediants that you will be able to find at most Asian markets or even your local grocery store. While recipes are relatively simple to follow, they are authentic and delicious.
Mai Pham provides helpful advice in many facets of preparing Vietnamese food, such as choosing the right types of noodles and herbs for your meals, along with detailed instructions on preparing each meal. She encourages her readers all through the book, with lively and helpful guidance is included each recipe. While authentic and detailed, it is not intimidating. I recommend Pleasures of the Vietnamese Table for anyone considering the preparation of Vietnamese food.
